About our Expert

Joseph Maroon, MD, a board certified neurosurgeon, team neurosurgeon to the Pittsburgh Steelers and author of Fish Oil, the Natural Anti-Inflammatory has been involved in the creation of Dark Chocolate Squares with Omega-3 and is available to speak to the media. Dr. Maroon is a leading expert in the health benefits of Omega-3.

As a practicing physician and neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon has continually been called upon to "fix the car after it is broken." But what if we could keep things running smoothly for years to come?

Dr. Maroon believes that this is what Omega-3 supplements are all about – natural fatty acids used by every cell in the body, providing essential nutrients for lifelong health and well being. He recently completed a survey demonstrating relief of spine pain in 60% his patients placed on Omega-3 supplements. Based on this research and the many thousands of scientific articles on the use of natural supplements to improve our health, Dr. Maroon extensively uses natural supplements and treatments in his daily medical practice.

Biography

Dr. Maroon is a board certified Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and has been the team physician for The Pittsburgh Steelers for the last 16 years. Honored as one of America's Best Neurosurgeons for 8 consecutive years, he has published 4 books, has written over 250 papers and 40 book chapters, many on sports medicine. His primary area of research is on the prevention and treatment of injuries and diseases of the brain and spine.

Early on, his athletic abilities earned him a football scholarship to the University of Indiana in Bloomington. As an undergraduate he was selected as a Scholastic All American in football. He subsequently obtained his medical and neurosurgical training at Indiana University, Georgetown University, Oxford University in England and the University of Vermont.

He was chairman of the departments of surgery and neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital/Medical College of Pennsylvania prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh in 1999. As the team neurosurgeon for The Pittsburgh Steelers he has conducted much research on injury prevention and also done research on nutraceuticals for enhancing strength and endurance. In addition he and his colleague, neuropsychologist Mark Lovell, Ph.D., developed ImPACT – (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). This is the first computerized evaluation system to determine concussion severity and also if and when it is safe for an athlete to return to contact sports. This program is now the standard of care in the NFL, NHL, major league baseball, NASCAR and over 2,000 colleges and high schools in the United States. Because of his work in sports head injury he was appointed by the NFL to the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee in 2007.

He has developed many innovative surgical approaches in his research into brain tumors and diseases of the spine such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis. He has performed over 6,000 operations for lumbar and disc herniations using innovative, minimally invasive surgical techniques some of which he has developed. He has also operated on over 1,000 patients with tumors of the pituitary gland.

He has been honored for his neurosurgical contributions by the national neurosurgical societies of many foreign countries including Japan, Korea, Thailand, Egypt, Brazil and Lebanon. He also was honored by his peers when he was elected to be the President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the largest society of neurosurgeons in North America. Other outside activities include a member of the Board of Directors of Mylan Laboratories, the third largest generic drug manufacturer in the world. He is also the chairman of the scientific advisory board to the General Nutrition Corporation and the medical director of Xenomis, a company partnered with Harvard University to develop natural products to enhance endurance and memory.

Despite his busy professional schedule, Dr. Maroon remains an avid athlete and has competed in over 60 triathlon events. These include 5 Ironman distance triathlons (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run) in Hawaii (1993 and 2003), Canada (1995), New Zealand (1997) and Europe (2000). He placed sixth in the Senior Olympics Triathlon in 2005. In 1999 he, along with Joe Montana and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, were inducted into the Lou Holtz Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments and contributions to sports medicine.
